Since moving out to Harris County it is very difficult for me to be anywhere by 7am...which is when the Eye Opener breakfasts are once a month....the biggest networking opportunity. I don't think we've gotten any inquiries as a result of the ad....the inquiries we see are coming through our web site....so I don't see the need to spend money on the ad anymore. I do think it is important to be part of the chamber...but only if we have officers attending the functions. The breakfast is every month...the lunch is every other month...the business after hours has been quarterly but might have gone to monthly this year...I don't remember at the moment. If any of the other officers are willing to attend the functions...maybe rotate who attends the functions each month...then it's still worth it. We had another PM Certificate Orientation Tuesday night at CSU....and 12 people showed up....all said they wanted to earn their certificate and then go on for PMP certification. ________________________________ From: Beckman, John [mailto:jbeckman at bcbsga.com] Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 9:33 AM To: TJarrett at tsys.com; JJKing at tsys.com Cc: Mills-Long, Alison; board at pmicolumbusga.org; board-bounces at pmicolumbusga.org; Jacqueline Harris Subject: RE: [Board] PMI Ad in Chamber Directory I don't know that we have produced any leads by our ad in the directory. Benning are fortunate to be in an economic sweet spot. Although 2009 didn't feel like much of a sweet spot, compared to folks around us, we've got quite a few things about which we can boast. This year, 2010, will be pivotal. The construction tsunami at Ft. Benning continues in advance of the Maneuver Center of Excellence's armor mission. We've recently passed Special Purpose and Local Option Sales Taxes that will infuse much-needed capital to fund public projects and public education. These self-imposed taxes signal the good news that our citizenry is willing to invest in a bright future. With so many new people moving into our area, this year's Chamber Membership Directory is the perfect way to introduce your company to people who don't know you. Don't miss this great advertising opportunity to be surrounded by businesses who intend to grab 2010 by the horns and make something happen. Columbus and the Valley Magazine will be producing the book again this year and we'll be doing our best to make a personal contact with every Greater Columbus and Phenix City/Russell County Chamber member, but it is unlikely that we'll be fortunate enough to get face-to-face time with each of you. Please contact us and let us know that your company is interested in making something happen this year and that you want to be a part of the Chamber Membership Directory. There are more ways than ever to get your advertising message in front of people who are pro-business. For information about how you can leverage your advertising message in the 2010 Chamber Membership Directory into more business for your company please contact mike at columbusandthevalley.com. Topping Chattahoochee Valley Community College celebrates Topping Ceremony CVCC's faculty and staff were excited to participate in our Topping Ceremony - signing their names to the last piece of steel for CVCC's new Instructional and Performing Arts Center. The $11 million, 60,000-square-foot, three-story building will be home to CVCC's divisions of Health Sciences, Language, Business, Social Sciences and Technology, as well as a 420-seat auditorium and our new Advanced Visualization Center. Among many other things, this is where we will train and educate the nurses, communications experts and computer technicians our region will need for BRAC-related growth. The project has received widespread support from the entire region, as well as the Alabama Community College System and the CVCC faculty and staff. We know what opportunities it will bring for our students and our community and we look forward to seeing you at our Hard Hat tours in February. The man chosen each year was selected based upon civic service, not for profit involvement, political engagement and in some cases business success. In 1964, this award was changed to the Jr. Allen Award named in honor of JR Allen who was the Mayor of Columbus. Mayor Allen among many achievements led our City through challenging but very successful years. Unfortunately, he was killed in a plane crash during a time that many say he was on the way to perhaps become the Governor of the State. (R) Billy Blanchard receives the JR Allen Award at the Greater Columbus Georgia Annual Meeting Jan. 11 at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. "It is fitting that this award be reinstituted, "Richard Anthony, 2010 Chair of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce. "We are excited that this year, we have added into the selection process some of the elements of the Young Professionals program and Chamber volunteer leadership. I can't think of a better way to enhance the YP program and for the Chamber to recognize one of our younger leaders than by presenting the first JR Allen today." Billy Blanchard joined Columbus Bank and Trust in January 1995 as a Management Associate. During his fifteen year banking career, he has spent time in CB&T's branches, worked as a Credit Analyst and served the Synovus affiliates as a Business Development Officer and a Commercial Lender in the Corporate Banking Department as well as Executive Vice President responsible for Retail Banking activities. Eye Opener Breakfast Partners In Education (PIE) was spotlighted at the Chamber's Eye Opener Breakfast on December 17, at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center. The focus of the program was to increase awareness of PIE which is the Chamber's oldest and largest volunteer initiative. Currently, more than 200 partnerships exist amongst 88 schools in five school districts. In the 2008-2009 school year alone, more than 50,000 volunteer hours were contributed to PIE. Partners In Education (originally known as Adopt-A-School) was started in 1987 as a joint venture of the Muscogee County School District and the Greater Columbus, Georgia Chamber of Commerce. It is based on the concept that human capital is the most important resource a partner can provide. To drive this point home, WRBL co-anchor, Phil Scoggins, along with the station's Marketing Director, Shelly Mathews, presented a video of highlights of their partnership with Loyd Elementary School at Fort Benning, GA. This included clips of Loyd students sending holiday greetings to their deployed parent(s) and clips from Loyd's other partners, the 4th Ranger Training Battalion and the HHC 203rd Brigade Support Battalion, who are stationed at Fort Benning. Because of WRBL's participation in PIE, they were chosen by Sony Television Pictures and Jeopardy, to make the following contribution to Loyd: http://www2.wrbl.com/rbl/news/local/education/ article/loyd_elementary_buzzing_about_classroom _jeopardy/107591/ . The goals of Partners In Education are: 1. Strengthen the Greater Columbus Region's commitment to education 2. Stimulate academic achievement and life-long learning 3. Support area businesses in developing and maintaining a highly skilled workforce It is through the support, dedication, generosity and commitment of community partners such as WRBL, the 4th Ranger Training Battalion and the HHC 203rd Brigade Support Battalion, that PIE goals are consistently and effectively achieved. Being a collaborative effort between the Chamber and Leadership Columbus Alumni, its goal is to provide involved and committed community leaders. Participants will be given the chance to develop an understanding of the challenges that face the Columbus region. The program is designed to expose highly talented and motivated leaders to issues which will determine the future direction of the area. This will encourage initiative to address and solve these issues. Leadership Columbus will not attempt to create a consensus of opinions or promote any specific concern. Class members will benefit from a wide variety of experiences along with the network of relationships between the classes. "The Tradition of Excellence Continues...." (L-R) Steve Melton, Chair of the Fort Benning Future Partnership for our Bi-State Region, Jeff Humphreys, Director, Selig Center for Economic Growth Terry College of Business, " Robert T. Sumichrast, Dean, Terry College of Business, The University of Georgia. And Mike Gaymon, President and CEO of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce. The people who land those 11,000 at Fort Benning jobs will be supporting 16,000 family members, which means that Columbus will enjoy a population boost in the high 20,000 folks. Since most of those folks will not be living on the base itself, the demand for housing and services in the community will soar. The multiplier effects associated with spending by people who land these new jobs should create at least 6,000 more jobs in the off-base economy. So, Fort Benning's growth will generate at least 17,000 jobs. "And, it is very, very important to recognize that you have yet to actually feel very much of the economic impact of these planned expansions at Fort Benning," said Humphreys. The big economic push in terms of population growth and job creation associated with the 2005 BRAC did not really begin." "Your recent success will not go unnoticed by those professionals who will decide where new projects go," Humphreys said. "The logic goes: if KIA and NCR choose Columbus, then Columbus should also be on my short list. By the way, the current issue of "Site Selection" magazine ran a very positive feature on Columbus. That kind of publicity increases your prospects for landing additional projects in 2010." "Last year, based on data through November, it looks like single-family permits actually bucked the trend and rose by 8% in Columbus," said Humphreys. So, the good news is that the free fall in new home construction in Columbus ended in 2008 and things turned sharply positive in 2009. That upturn will intensify in 2010. The Terry College's Advice: "take advantage of the recovery that is underway and the robust expansion that is coming. As I indicated a few minutes ago, all the stars have lined up for vigorous economic growth in the Columbus region." All the stars have lined up for the Columbus Region. From late 2009 through 2012: * 17,000 jobs will stem from the BRAC * 13,700 jobs will exist due to Kia. * NCR and the other projects I cited should add 2,400 jobs. 'Put it all together, and you get about 50,000 jobs," said Humphreys. "You only lost about 4,800 to the Great Recession." Call the Business Resource Center for more details. vpam The Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority holds Annual Meeting Jan. 21 The Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority held its annual meeting at the CSU Cunningham Center Jan. 21 with more than 80 people attending the evening event. (L-R) Jacki Lowe, 2010 chair presented a gift to Harry Lange, 2009 chair for his services as chair of the Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority. (Pictured right) Becca Hardin, Executive Vice President, Economic Development provided an update to the Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority on 2009 activity. During Hardin's report on the years activities she highlighted for the second year The Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority won Georgia Economic Developer's "Deal of the year" award for NCR. She also talked about 1,952 jobs created in 2009 and the more than 136,200,000 in capital investment made in the region even with many projects being put on hold in 2009. Since 2003 the Valley Partnership region has received more than $14.5 million from OneGeorgia Authority to support projects and development. The first Kia car rolled off the line in November 2009. They have 1,200 employees and are interviewing for 1,000 plus more for a second shift. She also talked about the expansions of Exide Technologies 200 jobs $35 million capital investment, Lance Inc. 70 jobs $10.5 million capital investment, Berry Plastics Corp. 25 jobs $4 million capital investment and Columbus Gourmet, Inc. 50 jobs $700,000 capital investment. Columbus' Economic Outlook was the only one to grow in attendance this year. Even in a slow economy the Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority is creating jobs and capital investment in the region. In doing so they are creating business growth potential for area businesses. While you might not be able to track individual customers to these projects they are having a positive impact on the region and your business. maximize Maximize Your Membership Take advantage of being a member of one the most influential business organizations in the Southeast, here are some tips that will help you maximize your membership: * Review your level of membership and commensurate benefits. * Do we have the right representatives from your company in our database? * Do we have all of their contact information, including mailing address, telephone, fax and email? * Is your representative list current? * Have you and your representatives (where appropriate) joined a committee, Task Force, and Niche Market program? Partners In Education is a program of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce and was established in 1987 to partner schools with civic organizations, military units, and churches. These partnerships provide increased educational and enrichment opportunities for students improving levels of achievement, self-esteem, and understanding the expectations of the work world. PIE is based on the concept of human capital. Therefore, it doesn't cost anything to participate.
