I look forward to bringing you another year of informative, interesting and hot project management & quality topics! Today as I begin the process of putting together the 2010 Speakers' program for our Columbus, GA PMI chapter, I naturally thought of all of you! Over the past couple of years many of you have honored the Columbus PMI Chapter with your teachings on Project Management. Your knowledge and wisdom has been much appreciated and your selfless contributions to our group inspirational! This year we have several topics that are of interest to our membership group. If you are available and interested in speaking at one of our chapter meetings on one of these or other associated topics, we would be honored to have you join us. Our meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month February through November. Most presentations run from 45 min to an hour (11:30-1:00) and the topics range from PM Best practices to Tools and techniques. For your convenience, a list of topics our members expressed interest in is listed below. The location is the Columbus Public Library in the CB&T/Synovus Meeting Room and we usually average 30-35 members who attend. The items I would need the month prior to the meeting include your topic for discussion and your Biography. With your permission we would feature your information on our web site @ http://www.pmicolumbusga.org Also, if there are expenses (travel), I will need an approximate quote before we can confirm, so I can run it by our finance person to ensure funds are available. As you can imagine, like most non-profit organizations, our budget is very limited. If you are interested, please let me know what month is good for you and I'll put you down. As you can imagine I would like to fill February through July as quickly as possible so that I can communicate the 2010 Program to our members as soon as possible. The Columbus, GA PMI chapter appreciates all you've done to help us in the past few years and look forward to hearing back from you soon for 2010. Some Topics of Interest: 1.) Going Green 2.) As a testimony to his various skills he has picked up multiple certifications along the way and currently holds numerous certifications including PMP, MCSE, and a virtual alphabet soup of additional credentials. In addition to certifications, he also has experience with various telecom vendors' products including Lucent, Aspect, Apropos, 3Com and Cisco. As a volunteer with PMI, Dan has served with Chapters in Chicago, IL and Atlanta, GA as well as both the IT & Telecom SIG and the ISSIG. He was elected to the IT & Telecom SIG board of directors in 2003 and held positions as both Vice-Chair and Chair of that organization consisting of more than 6000 members worldwide dedicated to excellence in ICT project management. He was also selected to serve with PMI's Community Transformation Project (CTP), an effort to mold the PMI of tomorrow with selected high quality leaders of today and went on to provide direct Project Management expertise for Phase I of the Virtual Communities Project (VCP). He was and founding member of and now serves on the Virtual Communities Advisory group, the group responsible for the strategic advice to PMI Global Operations Center and the PMI Board of Directors. Location: Columbus Main Library Auditorium 3000 Macon Road. Lunch (on your own) and networking at 11:30am, the program begins at 12 noon. Our guest speaker will be Dan Tuten, PMP & MCSE. Dan's topic: Elephant on the Wire. Professional Development Speaker Dan Tuten, PMP, MCSE is the former Chair of the PMI IT & Telecom SIG. He is employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an IT Project Manager responsible for the computer systems delivering processing for multiple business units. He has had speaking engagements in much of the US and Canada as well as international audiences with PMI's Global Congresses and Leadership Institute Meetings in EMEA. He is a graduate of and guest facilitator for the PMI Leadership Institute Master's Class. Project Management for Dan began with the Department of Defense and an Army career that would lead through several assignments and project management challenges. These learning experiences included logistics, IT and planning endeavors, which in turn, allowed him a solid base of experience to take into the private sector. His project management skills were honed to perfection through planning, implementing and managing several IT, telecom and support projects at companies ranging from startups through midsize to Fortune 500. His projects have included CRM, PBX, and support implementations; system, network and telecom upgrades and/or replacements; as well as network, system and software designs. As a testimony to his various skills he has picked up multiple certifications along the way and currently holds numerous certifications including PMP, MCSE, and a virtual alphabet soup of additional credentials. The Chattahoochee Valley Community College's high Tech 3-D simulation program was made possible through the efforts to write and secure the $3 million grant funding from the Department of Labor. This 3-D simulation program was just an element of the overall workforce initiatives being funded by the grant. There will be more to come on other grant elements. Tweeting and Facebooking might sound like inappropriate terms for the workplace, but the Chamber's Partners in Education program is trying it anyway. According to Pew Internet and American Life's numbers, one in five Americans uses a social networking site. Twitter has 75 million users and growing, but who tweets? The average user looks just like you. Young, old, professional, searching for opportunities, or otherwise, social network users come in different packages. And then the important question: what is so appealing about updating a status? Absolutely nothing, but one sentence can connect you to millions, or billions of users worldwide. It creates more bang for your buck, especially since when pay $0 to use these sites. PIE saw an incredible opportunity in this and recently created accounts for Facebook, Twitter, and Wordpress. The accounts feature updates, links, and profiles of partners. It is a gateway to the Partners in Education program, providing information about the program and opportunities to get involved. Now it is your turn. GET IN ON THE ACTION and we'll mention your company just for joining our team. It has always been free to partner with PIE, now it is just a little easier. GET IN ON THE ACTION! Columbus State University's downtown campus began with the development of the public private partnership that created RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and has continued to grow. In another story, the city of Suwanee, Ga., is developing the Suwanee SculpTour modeled after the program run by UpTown Columbus, Inc. in Columbus. Valdosta leaders spent the day in Columbus learning about the Columbus Gateways project. The Greater Columbus "Partners in Education" (PIE) was established in 1987 as a joint venture of the Muscogee County School District and the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Originally known as "Adopt-A-School," its purpose is to improve education by stimulating meaningful business and community involvement in public schools. Careful consideration is given to match the needs of the school with the resources of the business. Partnership success is based on four key factors: 1) Improving Academic Performance; 2) Growing Career Opportunities; 3) Enriching the Life Experience of the Students; and 4) Developing Faculty Development and Enrichment. The proof is in the PIE: - Partners In Education has the largest volunteer base of any Chamber initiative. More than 50,000 volunteer hours were donated in the 2008-2009 school year alone - PIE has been officially recognized for its influence in placing Columbus on the "Best 100 Places to Raise a Family" for three consecutive years - PIE has awarded thousands of dollars in grants, scholarships and Partnership of the Year Awards - PIE has been active for 22 years and continues to grow - Currently, there are more than 200 partnerships amongst 88 schools in five school districts (Chattahoochee, Fort Benning, Harris, Muscogee and Talbot) - An audience average of 400 attend PIE events - Companies large and small are actively involved and making significant contributions to improve academic performance and enhance the lives of thousands of students - Jackie Lowe, Regional Vice President, Georgia Power Company, says of their partnership with Carver High School: "Working with the students and teachers at George Washington Carver High School, and watching the students graduation rate increase every year from tools that we have been able to help provide, is very rewarding." - PIE was the SACS team first commendation for Muscogee County School District receiving reaccreditation Purchase Your Ticket or Table Online or Print Form Purchase Your Sponsorship Online or Print Form Deadline for Reservations is Friday, April 16 A very special thank you to our many dedicated PIE Partners!! The Chattahoochee Valley Region is home to three colleges or universities, all of which are now or will shortly begin producing programmers skilled in 3D immersive and holographic imagery. This cutting edge technology is poised to lead the next leap forward in the games industry and the Chattahoochee Region is ready to meet the workforce needs of companies desiring to take advantage of this skilled and ready workforce. The games industry is also heavily engaged in supporting the training needs of our military. There is real potential for establishing a thriving entertainment and serious games industry in our region, one that supports the burgeoning growth of games for entertainment as well as the military's growing use of games as a training vehicle for the current generation of soldiers. Sherry Goodrum, Columbus Airport Commission chairperson, "We changed the name after doing research on what the community actually called the airport in anticipation of the rebranding and marketing campaign of the airport. The new website has been launched. Visit the site at www.flycolumbusga.com . We want to bring into the passenger's mind that the trip by air seems "shorter," and that the time passes "faster" and that getting from point A to point B is "easier." The rebranding comes as the Columbus Airport has received $3,171,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to resurface the 7,000' main runway, entitled, Runway6/24 Rehabilitation & Overlay-Phase II. The FAA funds were part of the Obama economic stimulus infrastructure projects "Airport Improvement Program" that were submitted as "shovel ready" last fall. The Georgia Department of Transportation contributed $80,664.65 to this project. Mark Oropeza, Airport Director, stated that, "Bringing federal and state funds for construction jobs is a significant contribution to the area's economy." Rebranding Campaign Projects include making the airport a destination for the community to increase traffic by displaying local artists work, CSU Faculty and staff, the Columbus Arts Alliance and Muscogee County School District Students. The project also includes: interior of the terminal repainting, wallpaper, flooring and furniture, exterior improvements to signage and lighting and creating new services. Then establishment of new services visitor center, Ambassador Volunteer program, meeting and reception areas, frequent flier program, frequent parking program and business center with WiFi access, telephone and fax. Committee Chairs learn about the duties of leading a Chamber Committee and the resources available. Did you know there are more than 27 committees in the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce from (what to what). One way to expand you business connections is to become involved in a committee. Take a look at all of your options. Brad Coppedge, of Hatcher, Stubbs, Land, Hollis & Rothschild, LLP and Chair of the Business Development Networking Group; Lori Auten, Area Manager, UGA/Small Business Development Center and Chair of the Women in Business Task Force; and Gary Silva, owner, Weichert Realty/Ellis & Silva and Chair, Hispanic Business Outreach-La Conexi?n Committee at the Chamber Committee Chair Orientation on Feb.5. Two Committee Chairs and a Task Force Chair were caught mulling over how they will recruit and set specific tasks for new members, take minutes of any meetings, and consider legislative and policy issues their respective groups might advocate. Among the things they learned in the Committee Chair Orientation: 2009 is history; 2010 is waiting to be developed; that they should begin with the end-of-the-year goal in mind; and, at the July meeting of the Chamber Board of Directors, they will be expected to have a mid-year report ready. It is little wonder that Chamber volunteers learn from their experiences with the Chamber. ________________________________ greening "Greening" the Construction Industry The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce hosted a Sustainable Industrial Construction Industry Network Meeting Jan.13. Sustainable Industrial Construction (SIC) is one of the projects being managed under the $3 million BRAC Fort Benning Regional Workforce Development Grant. The event brought together some of the area's construction industry leaders as well as representatives from large firms working on Fort Benning construction projects. In light of the increasing relevance of sustainability or "green" practices in our society and the mandate for Fort Benning construction projects to be built to a specified LEED certification, regional leaders in construction are taking the first steps in paving the way for the "greening" the construction industry. Education is key. Kevin Ward of the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA), spoke to the importance of educating the future workforce and about the creation of a regional construction alliance called the Chattahoochee Valley Construction Alliance. The intent of this alliance is to continue to serve the workforce needs of the contractors working in the Chattahoochee Valley Region, especially those working current contracts at Fort Benning and those to be awarded contracts at Fort Benning in the future by consolidating workforce requirements data and obtaining technical college support to produce a trained workforce to meet these requirements. According to LEED subject matter expert and certified LEED trainer, Lynn Deaton, two curriculum tracks have been developed. Track One will focus on educating and informing middle school, high school and college students on the increasing need for sustainability in the construction industry, while Track Two will focus on SIC Education for Professionals. For more information on these courses, you may contact Lynn Deaton at (404) 583-6883 or email lynn.deaton at gmail.com. dol_brac 2010 Training Plan for DOL BRAC Grant Sustainable Industrial Construction Education Click to view as PDF Click here to view the chart as a PDF . ________________________________ ________________________________ air Something In the Air... Columbus, GA & the Region continues to work to maintain our air attainment status. In clear terms the Georgia & Alabama Environmental Protection Departments plus the U.S. EPA periodically assess our air quality measuring for fine particulate matter & ozone. The good news is our region recently maintained air attainment status relating to fine particulate matter; however, regarding ozone there's work to do. There was an issue where I believe we were told that the room was reserved for us today but when I arrived, I discovered that they did not have us reserved. I was able to get us into the Auditorium for our meeting today. I apologize to those that tried to attend and may have left when told we weren't meeting there. I would ask that you please wait until a board member shows up or at least until 11:45 so if there is an issue we have time to correct it. Gen. Mike Milano, Commanding General Fort Knox, mentioned he was having issues moving armor museum items to Fort Benning. The (Fort Benning Partnership) public-private partnership working with Alabama and Georgia officials were able work out the weights and routes of moving the historic armor equipment to Fort Benning. In fact with the help of ADECA the Alabama State Police will escort the 233 Transportation Company through Alabama. There will be five convoys of 13 heavy equipment vehicles moving the 230 historic armor items to Fort Benning. The weight of this equipment moving to Fort Benning is equal to a World War II Light Cruiser; 6,000-8,000 tons. "The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce's Fort Benning Partnership has worked hard to make sure our Region is ready for the growth and development. We have completed the Regional Growth Management Plans for 10 counties and set up a One Stop Shop for relocation information in the region with concierge Linda Brady. The work to help solve this issue of moving the 230 historic items to Benning is another example of taking care of our military needs" said Mike Gaymon, President and CEO of the Chamber. "If Benning has an issue, then we all have an issue", Gaymon stated. ________________________________ ________________________________ Fayetteville Group visits the chamber for ideas for their community A group of Community leaders from Fayetteville, N.C. visited the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce Feb. 17 to learn how our public private partnership works on the NCR project, the Mayor provided an example of the Chamber's support for 1 cent sales tax for public safety and putting 100 new police on the street to make Columbus one of the safest cities in the country. Location: Columbus Main Library Auditorium 3000 Macon Road. Lunch (on your own) and networking at 11:30am, the program begins at 12 noon. Our guest speaker will be our very own Immediate Past Present Alison Mills-Long. Alison's Topic: "Stop Sabotaging Your Own Projects". "Are you your own worst stakeholder? If you complain about things like unresponsive team members or aggressive due dates then you are only contributing to your demise. The effect of the current economic environment on companies in a variety of industries is far reaching and results in increased stress levels of already strained resources trying to "do more with less." It's easy to fall into a mode of negativity given the challenging situations we all find ourselves in. You already know how your words and actions affect others, but did you realize your thoughts do too? Learn what the self-help/metaphysical gurus as well as the scientific communities say about how this actually works and then how to use your words and thoughts more effectively to promote more positive outcomes." Alison has over 19 years experience in project management in the financial services industry. She worked with TSYS for just over 10 years managing bankcard compliance, billing statement redesign and software development projects for clients such as Bank of America, Sears and Nordstrom. Her last position with TSYS was as Associate Director in TS2 Customer Contact Systems. Alison is currently a vice president and BankCard Services Project Office Manager for BB&T Financial, FSB. In her current position, Alison's responsibilities include the oversight of new bankcard product launches, acquisition activities including portfolio conversions, and compliance projects. She earned her B.A. degree from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Alison is a Project Management Institute (PMI) certified Project Management Professional (PMP(r)) as well as an American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Manager of Quality/Operational Excellence (CMQ/OE). She has been a member of PMI since 1995 and is a founding member of the PMI Columbus, GA Chapter which chartered in October 1996. Since the founding of the chapter, she has served as vice president of Communications & Publicity as well as Chapter President up until her current position as Immediate Past President. Alison is also a member of the American Society for Quality. She is also an instructor for Continuing Education and The Cunningham Center for Leadership Development at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA and volunteers for Columbus Hospice. Alison's approach to project management is about keeping the process simple and ensuring the scope of each request includes realistic, attainable goals. Applying soft skills to head off potential conflicts and promoting a spirit of teamwork is what she deems critical to the success of any project. Please show your support - Columbus PMI Jacqueline D.
